In 2018, I was riding the Great Divide Mountain Bike Trail, a 3083 mile off-road ride from Canada to Mexico, when my back started to hurt badly. Being an experienced cyclist, I just put the pain down to the exertion of a tough ride. I didn’t think too much about it when I got home but in February 2019 all of a sudden, my spine just snapped and following further tests I was diagnosed with myeloma. I underwent reconstructive surgery and incredibly my spine was reconnected with titanium screws and slowly but surely, I was soon able to walk again.
Unfortunately, I then had to undergo a long course of chemotherapy to treat the myeloma which culminated in having a stem cell transplant on 20 September 2019. I’ll always remember that date, but in 2020 I’m hoping it will be a memorable date for a far more positive reason.
I’m now in remission and I’m ready for the next challenge which is why I decided to sign up for the Myeloma UK London Paris Ride. On 19 September 2020 when I ride up toward the Arc de Triumph it’ll be nearly one year to the day since my stem cell transplant gave me a chance to live life normally for a while…my new first birthday!
Getting fit enough to do this ride will be very hard for me, as so many things can go wrong between then and now, but this challenge is motivating me to get back to fitness. I’m going for it, and I will cycle the 500km over four days from London to Paris, with the goal of helping to make myeloma history! If I can do it, so can other myeloma patients, and all funds raised will go toward research which will improve treatment and one day find a cure.
I’d love for you to join me on my new first birthday celebrations in Paris and celebrate making a difference to everyone affected by myeloma.
