Graham’s
story

Haematologist Prof Graham Jackson is combining his two passions in life – cycling and helping myeloma patients – to take part in the London Paris Ride.

Helping myeloma patients is a cause close to Prof Graham Jackson’s heart, “I have looked after myeloma patients throughout my entire medical career, which spans over 30 years to date. I am passionate about making life as good as possible for myeloma patients and regularly see the amazing work of Myeloma UK.”

Along with being Professor of Haematology at Newcastle University and running a local myeloma clinic, the 56 year old also sits on the Myeloma UK Board of Directors, “Myeloma UK is a great charity doing great things. It is innovative and puts myeloma patients at the heart of everything. I know how much my patients value the information, support and guidance they offer and I want to do all I can to help them continue their amazing work.”

Cycling is an everyday part of life for Graham, “I love cycling and ride to work and home again every day of the year. I also cycle with friends regularly at the weekend too.

“When it comes to training, it’s been going OK so far. I still need to get a few longer rides under my belt, although work pressures can make that difficult.”

When Graham sets up on the starting line, he reckons he’ll be feeling a sense of relief, if not some nerves, “I will no doubt be a little nervous and be worried I have forgotten something! I am hoping for great weather and can’t wait for the feeling of making it to Paris and meeting my wife who will be waiting for me on the finish line.”

The community have got behind Graham in a big way, “They have been fantastic, particularly the patients who have held a cake stall and patient afternoon where I spoke. I’m already £1,000 over my initial target which is amazing. Anything more at this point is very much a bonus.”

When asked to sum up how he felt about the Myeloma UK London Paris Ride, Graham simply said, “An exciting challenge, a great charity and a great opportunity to meet people.”
