Ian and Steve’s
story

Cousins Ian Wright and Steve Keable are taking part in the London Paris Ride. Ian’s father has myeloma, and as keen cyclists they are riding to raise awareness of myeloma and funds for Myeloma UK.

Cousins Ian and Steve are keen cyclists and were inspired to take part in the Myeloma UK London Paris Ride by Ian’s father. Ian explains, “My dad has myeloma. He mentioned the ride to me and said ‘wouldn’t it be amazing if I was well enough to travel to Paris and see you at the finish?’ Compared to what dad’s been through over the last few years, riding a bike for a few miles is not very tough. It’ll be wonderful to see him at the Arc de Triomphe.”

As well as cycling in support of his dad, Ian told us that it’s also important for the duo to raise awareness of myeloma. He said, “Until dad was diagnosed, I’d never heard of myeloma and I’m sure that’s true for a lot of people in this country. As a family, when you get exposed to something like this, you meet and hear a lot from other people who have myeloma – from those supporting their loved ones and from the healthcare professionals caring for patients.”

Ian is a keen cyclist but he’s never undertaken a challenge like this before. The idea of being in a pro-style peloton appealed to both him and his cousin, “Riding up the Champs Élysées is an amazing thought.”

The duo have started training for the main event but by all accounts not together just yet, “The last time we rode together was as teenagers and we were stopped by the police for cycling on the wrong side of the road. Based on that experience I’d say Steve’s something of a maverick with poor awareness of road signs. Let’s hope he’s not leading the peloton into Paris.”

As a family, when you get exposed to something like this, you meet and hear a lot from other patients, from those supporting their loved ones and from health professionals caring for patients. All are inspiring people to meet and it’s great to be able to do our bit to help.” Ian Wright and Steve Keable
