Meet Ilysa from Hood River, Oregon, USA who will be taking part in the London to Paris Ride 2019 to help raise vital funds for Myeloma UK.
“In January of 2017, I was looking for a bike ride to raise funds to support research and awareness of Multiple Myeloma and came across the Myeloma UK London Paris Ride. I was 3 months post stem cell transplant. My story, a variation on many I’ve heard since is this: I had vague rib pain off and on for 6 months in May of 2016 and not until I had some impact on my chest during a stand-up paddleboard trip, did I seek a chest X-ray because it seemed like I may have a rib fracture which didn’t seem right. I was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma.
As an avid athlete with a healthy lifestyle, and never having had a health issue, this came as quite a shock. In addition, I had worked as a nurse for 32 years and never thought I’d be the patient. I was lucky that in the 5 years before I was diagnosed, research had been done that improved treatment tremendously. However, although treatable, Multiple Myeloma is not curable. I am optimistic and have been in remission for the past 2 1/2 years but never know when that lab work will show the results indicating I need further treatment.
The Ride is so well organised and fun. It’s the closest most of us will ever be to feeling like Tour de France riders. Rolling road closures, snacks and lunch, massages and bodywork at lunch, scenic roads and towns, and wonderful people coming together for a common cause. All you have to do to get ready is ride your bike! Well, ride it a lot. And send a request to friends and family and others about the great challenge you are taking for a good cause. The out of pocket cost to do the ride is so reasonable for a 4 day trip in England and France. If you can’t make the ride, please consider donating.”
You can help Ilysa Parker raise money for Myeloma UK by donating directly to the Myeloma UK JustGiving fundraising page. JustGiving sends your donation straight to Myeloma UK and automatically reclaims Gift Aid if you are a UK taxpayer, so your donation is worth even more. Thank you for your support!
Places for this exclusive ride are limited.
