Meet Michael from Essex, UK who will be taking part in the London to Paris Ride 2019 to help raise vital funds for Myeloma UK.
“I was diagnosed in 2013 with Myeloma which presented itself on my spine. I was in great pain for several weeks and fell over one evening at home and could not get up as I lost all feeling in my abdomen and my legs. I was rushed into hospital and was informed that I required an operation that would remove a tumour on my spine and I would probably be paralysed. Having run marathons, played sport to a reasonable level this was devastating news, gradually I was able to move my legs again and spend 6 months in rehab at the Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore Middlesex where they got me on my feet again.
When I was diagnosed I had never heard of myeloma, then I started to investigate what the implications where for myself and through ‘Google’ I came across ‘Myeloma UK’ and was interested in the information and back up available for patients like myself.
I am currently in a clinical trial that commenced in August 2017. Treatment commenced with dexamethasone, thaliomidmide and ixazomib (the trial drug) for 8 cycles followed by stem cell treatment. I am now just taking ixazomib but this will be until at least till June 2020. One of the reasons I was asked if I’d be interested in taking part in the clinical trial was that I showed a level of fitness and strength which was partly due to completing the 2017 ride.
The ride was a great opportunity for me to regain some measure of fitness and allowed me to raise money for the cancer and doing something positive for the illness. I really enjoyed the experience. Being able to ride in an event such as the 2019 London to Paris gives me enormous self-pride and pleasure.
I have commenced training in the gym and am out on my bike, I will train with my partner Nicola and we will cycle, cycle and more cycling. The more supporters that sign up for the ride the more awareness will be raised and it will have a positive effect on your lives.”
