Susie has been supporting Myeloma UK ever since she was diagnosed with myeloma, aged 44. Having received high-dose therapy and stem cell transplantation in 2014, Susie is excited about taking part in the ride.
Susie Suter has cycled on and off over the last 20 years but only recently got back on her bike, having been diagnosed with myeloma in 2013.
Susie recalls, “I was told I had myeloma nearly three and a half years ago now. It temporarily put a bit of a stop to my gallop but I am much better now, having undergone high dose therapy and stem cell transplantation in March 2014.
Despite having done some cycling prior to her myeloma diagnosis, Susie says she sees herself as a complete beginner, “I did train to do a sportive prior to my diagnosis but never got there as it was the start of my myeloma and I was not well. I have only just started cycling again, having previously not been allowed to, due to the amount of bone damage I had. I am pretty well now, though my immunity is not as good as it was but I thought this might be a good time for another life challenge!”
Susie is fitting in training around running a busy family hotel business in the Brecon Beacons, “I am doing a 16 week training plan which means I can train indoors during the colder weather but I hope to get outside when the weather gets a bit better. It’s been quite frustrating having to rest when I become unwell but I will plough on.”
Susie will be joined on the ride by her husband, James and friend, Piers, “The vision of finishing in Paris is keeping me going and I really want to do this. I am very excited about taking part. I think this will be one of those amazing events which will really get my adrenaline going.”
